Shenzhen Polytechnic Holds the First "Secretary & President Afternoon Tea" Activity in the New Semester

Date: Sep 10, 2020

The activity is held in the Party-mass Service Center of the Chongli Academy, Xilihu Campus.

On the afternoon of September 9, 2020, Shenzhen Polytechnic held the first "Secretary & President Afternoon Tea" Activity in the new semester. Yang Xinbin, Secretary of the Party Committee and President of Shenzhen Polytechnic enjoyed the afternoon tea with student representatives from different schools, and they discussed the theme of "learning to get along with others".

During the activity, Yang Xinbin indicated that the campus is coming alive as students are coming back. He explained the purpose and significance of the theme - "how to get along with others", and encouraged teachers and students present to speak out their feelings, ideas, and suggestions freely.

Teachers and students on the site actively expressed their experiences and feelings gained from their study, work, and life, shared their understanding of the theme of getting along with others and improving interpersonal relationship from different perspectives, and raised valuable ideas such as "transpositional consideration", "learning to compliment others", "being a good listener", "treating others with sincerity", and "behaving properly". From a professional viewpoint, Han Dan, Director of the Psychology Center introduced five keys to strong interpersonal skills, which are "impression management", "effective communication", "gratitude", "kindness", and "tolerance". Meanwhile, the insight told by four sentences - "regard others as yourself", "regard yourself as yourself", "regard yourself as others", and "regard others as others" was so inspiring for the on-site teachers and students.

After the discussion, Yang Xinbin made a summary. He indicated that although the theme of "learning to get along with others" is not a grand one, it influences a person's whole life. Since everyone is keeping contact with others, contradictions of all kinds are inevitable in the process. But, if these contradictions cannot be resolved in a timely manner, social barriers are likely to arise to impact our learning and life. He further analyzed the roots and objects of contradictions. He told students that the first step to resolve contradictions is to hold a receptive attitude. All should acknowledge that it is normal that contradictions exist in interpersonal relationships. What people should do is to control those contradictions within a reasonable range and degree. Afterward, Yang Xinbin implied that the real purpose of this "Afternoon Tea" activity is to cultivate the EQ through the topic of "learning to get along with others". EQ is associated with a person's career development. A high EQ can be cultivated through hard work. He hoped that students can be strict with themselves in self-cultivation, making greater efforts in learning and developing a higher EQ.

Finally, Yang Xinbin gave two suggestions to students: the first is to be receptive to losses. As he cited the example of Michael Yu, founder of New Oriental, who got hot water for his roommates during the four years of university life, Yang Xinbin wanted to tell students that "suffering losses" is a kind of wisdom. One should not be shortsighted but open-minded and kind to others, which will win more space for his own development. The second is to be forward-looking. Life is long, so do not be anxious and hindered by present minutiae, and thus getting trapped. The school will strive to create an environment ideal for students' development. It is expected that students can look to the future to improve the EQ and interpersonal relationships for a happy life.

Relevant departments such as the Students' Affairs Office, Youth League Committee, Logistics and Infrastructure Office, Security Office, School of Electronics & Information Engineering, and Psychology Center participated in the activity.
