Over the past 25 years, Shenzhen Polytechnic has achieved leapfrog development. The annual scientific research funds have exceeded 100 million yuan, and the total scientific research funds have reached 581 million yuan. There are 33 scientific research platforms at the provincial, ministerial, municipality and district level in the college. The scientific prowess of the college is far ahead of its peers.
1. Focusing on Application
In 2008, the college issued the Opinions on Promoting Scientific Research and other scientific research 1+7 documents, establishing the "application-oriented" research direction, and emphasizing that scientific research should pay attention to application and actual effect, and can reflect higher vocational education and technical characteristics. Over the past 10 years, the college focuses on application-oriented basic research and application-oriented technique research, and attaches great importance to the technology transfer and commercialization of scientific and technological achievements. The Technology Transfer Office was established in 2011, and the Management Method on Technology Transfer (Horizontal) Projects and the Implementation Method on Commercialization of Scientific and Technological Achievements were released, greatly stimulating the enthusiasm of the scientific research personnel to carry out the applied research.
2. Strong Platforms and Teams
In 2017, the college cooperated with Professor Roald Hoffmann, a Nobel Prize Laureate from Cornell University, and his team to set up the Hoffmann Institute of Advanced Materials, which is the first Nobel Prize Scientist Laboratory jointly built by vocational colleges in China.
Our college issued the Management Method of Scientific Research Innovation Platforms, and the Management Method of Scientific Research Innovation Teams, creating superior scientific research directions and teams. At present, our college has a total of eight scientific research platforms at the provincial and ministerial level, 21 ones at municipality level, and four ones at district level. Since 2011, our college has built four batches of school-level scientific research innovation platforms and teams, including 18 school-level platforms and 27 teams.
The college actively cooperates with other domestic colleges to jointly cultivate postgraduate students and recruit postdoctoral students. It has signed agreements with 133 domestic colleges to jointly cultivate 661 postgraduate students and 24 doctoral students. Since the establishment of our Postdoctoral Innovation Practice Base in 2015, nine postdoctoral students have been recruited.
3. Making Great Progress in Scientific Prowess
Over the past 25 years, with the attention of the college’s leadership teams and the great efforts made by scientific research personnel, our college has achieved leapfrog development in scientific research.
At the beginning of its establishment, the college’s annual available scientific research funds were only 16,000 yuan, and only more than 10 papers were published.
In 1998, the college published its first SCI/EI paper and won the municipal-level scientific research awards for the first time in the same year;
In 2000, the patent of our college was approved for the first time;
In 2002, the project of our college was approved as the national-level scientific research project;
In 2006, the college won the scientific research awards at the provincial and ministerial level for the first time;
In 2012, the available scientific research funds exceeded 50 million yuan;
In 2016, the annual scientific research funds exceeded 100 million yuan;
In 2017, the available funds set a new record.
Since its establishment, the college has undertaken 4,471 scientific research projects at various levels, including 69 national-level projects, 374 provincial-and ministerial-level projects, and 735 municipal-and district-level projects. It has published 188 academic monographs, 101 edited books, 13 translated books, and 12,901 academic papers. And 61 scientific research achievements have been awarded by the Ministry of Education, Guangdong Province and Shenzhen City. In June 2015, the Institute of Vocational & Adult Education of East China Normal University and other institutions released the Research Report on Evaluation of Scientific Research Competitiveness of 200 National Demonstrative and Key Vocational Colleges in China. Our college ranked first with a score of 85.53, and ranked first in three indicators such as the number of CSCD papers.
4. Integration of Enterprises, Universities, Research Institutes and End-users Promotes Development
Since 2017, the college has set up three comprehensive research and development platforms, namely the Application Technology Research Institute, Cultural Creative Product Research and Development Institute, and Institute of Economic and Social Development, to carry out applied research and development, innovative design, research and consultation on strategic emerging industries, future industries, cultural creative industries, and major issues related to economic and social development in Shenzhen, and explore new models of applied research and development and school-enterprise cooperation. Our college has signed the strategic cooperation agreements with the Economy, Trade and Information Commission of Shenzhen Municipality, State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, China Unicom, China Mobile, ZTE, Huawei, National Engineering Research Center for Rapid Manufacturing, Chaihuo Makers Space, Shenzhen Institute of Terahertz Technology and Innovation, and other government departments and industrial enterprises, creating a wider space for the scientific research development of our college in the new era.
