Faculties

Established in 2021, the School of Food and Drug is committed to the development of Shenzhen's strategic emerging industries, such as biomedicine and life health. Its establishment can be traced back to the Department of Biological Applied Engineering established in 1996 and the School of Applied Chemistry and Biotechnology established in 2005.

The School offers three different majors, namely Food Biotechnology, Food Inspection and Testing Technology, and Pharmacy. Among them, Food Biotechnology is a provincial demonstration major and a provincial second-class brand major, Pharmacy is a provincial key major and a provincial first-class high-level major, and Food Inspection and Testing Technology is a pilotmajorfor modern apprenticeships.

The School currently has 50 faculty members and ten postdoctoral fellows in the Postdoctoral Innovation Practice Base. Among the full-time teachers, there are 13 professors, 18 associate professors, and 21 teachers who have doctoral degrees, including two Distinguished Professors of Pearl River Scholars Program of Guangdong Province, one Chair Professor of Pearl River Scholars Program, one Outstanding Teacher of South Guangdong Province, one Distinguished Professor of Pengcheng Scholars Program of Shenzhen, six Leading High-level Talents of Shenzhen, one expert receiving special allowance of Shenzhen Municipal Government, one Prominent Teacher of China National Light Industry Council, and two School-level Prominent Teachers. One of the full-time teachers is a member of the National Food Industry Steering Committee and chairman of the Food Fermentation Technology Teaching Steering Committee, while three others are experts of the Government Expert Committee on Food Safety.

The School has a first-class training center covering an area of 3,300 m², with 16 training workshops and more than 1,900 sets of precision instruments and equipment worth RMB 56.42 million. The Biotechnology Training Workshop is a central vocational education training demonstration base recognized by the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Finance of the PRC, the Pharmacy Training Workshop is a training base for the quality improvement plan of modern vocational education supported by central financing, and the Biochemical Analysis and Testing Center has obtained the CMA certification qualification of Guangdong Province. It has established more than 180 stable off-campus practice bases with internationally known enterprises such as BGI, Hepalink, Sinopharm, China Certification & Inspection Group, and Centre Testing International. In addition, Shenzhen Zhijun Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Sinopharm Group, is an off-campus training base for college students in Guangdong Province.

The School has four national quality resource sharing courses and five provincial quality resource sharing courses, as well as one quality course of Higher Education Steering Committee under the Ministry of Education. Teachers of the School have edited more than 20 textbooks and won two Teaching Achievement Awards of Guangdong, including one special prize.

Committed to cultivating innovative talents of high quality and technical skill levels, the School is working closely with Shenzhen Administration for Market Regulation, Hepalink, etc. to jointly build distinctive industry colleges represented by Shenzhen College of Food Science and Hepalink Biomedical Science School. Together with these enterprises, the School formulatesprofessional standards, develop courses, build faculty teams, and cultivate technical and skilled talents, thus fulfilling its role as a first-class service provider for first-class enterprises.

The School has six provincial and municipal scientific research and innovation platforms, namely the Guangdong Marine Medicine Production and Education Integration Innovation Platform, Shenzhen Comprehensive Test Station of National Litchi and Longan Modern Agricultural Industrial Technology System, Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Fermentation Refining and Testing System, Shenzhen Biochemical Analysis and Testing Technology Public Service Platform, Shenzhen Large-scale Cell Culture Technology and Cell Resource Bank Public Technology Service Platform, and Shenzhen Marine Biological Breeding Innovation Platform, as well as a Marine Biomedical Research Institute, a first-class R&D platform, and an innovation team on food safety and quality control in Guangdong. Over the past five years, it has undertaken 40 vertical scientific research projects at all levels, including three projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and 65 horizontal applied research projects, with a total research fund of RMB 18.43 million. The School has won the first prize of the Chinese Agricultural Science and Technology Award, two first prizes of Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, and one first prize of Guangdong Provincial Agricultural Technology Promotion Award. Its teachers have also published 77 papers, including 26 SCIs, and obtained 58 authorized patents.

The students of the School have excellent professional skills, outstanding innovation ability and excellent comprehensive qualities. Students from the School have won numerous awards in the National Vocational College Skills Competition, including the national first prize in the Food Nutrition and Testing Competition, the provincial first prize in the Traditional Chinese Medicine Skills Competition, two gold medals in the national finals of the China International College Students' "Internet+" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, and gold medals in the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGEM), reflecting the students' high comprehensive quality and technological innovation ability. Graduates of the School are in high demand, with an average employment rate of over 98%.
