I. Shenzhen Polytechnic

Shenzhen Polytechnic (SZPT) is one of the 28 exemplary higher education institution for full-time technical and vocational education and training (TVET) honoured by the China State Ministry of Education. It locates in Shenzhen, the first Special Economic Zone in China which links Hong Kong on its south. It is invested by the Shenzhen municipal government, mainly focusing on cultivating young generation with high standardized applied professional techniques for the front line of production, construction, management and services as well. Founded in 1993, SZPT, today, has four campuses (the East, the West, the North, and the Overseas Chinese Town Campuses) which, together, occupy a total area of 168 hectares with 49 hectares of building areas. These buildings house libraries with over 1.34 million books, laboratory complexes, and many other state-of-the-art facilities. SZPT’s Industrial Training Center, for example, includes 28 training laboratories and 116 branch laboratories. In addition, SZPT operates 330 off-campus practice bases for the students.

Since its foundation, SZPT has sought to construct a model of higher TVET with Chinese characteristics. Their efforts have been rewarded with many awards. In the past ten years, it has obtained the First Prize of National Educational Achievement for two times, which is out of severe competition every four years at the national level. In January 2003, SZPT was designated a key national polytechnic. In September 2003, it was granted the title of a “Model Polytechnic”. By now, SZPT has been nominated by the China State Ministry of Education and China Ministry of Finance as a National Model Polytechnic after a three-year construction and strict assessments. And it has been considered as one of the pioneer polytechnics in China.

SZPT now has 25,788 full-time students together with 150 students from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and some foreign countries. It employs a team of 1397 working staff, among which 845 are full-time teachers. In the teacher team, 95 are professors, 444 associate professors, 126 with doctorial degrees and 677 with master’s degrees. In addition, it also contracted with 1395 academic and skilled engineers and technicians as part-time teachers.

SZPT pays high attention and efforts to internationalization. It has established long-term and stable cooperative relationships with more than 70 universities and higher educational institutions outside the mainland China, including universities and academic institutes in Britain, Germany, France, Spain, Russia, Australia, the United States, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Seven foreign languages, including English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish, are taught here in SZPT. Every semester, it has about 25 foreign teachers on the campuses teaching different languages and professional courses. Every year, it receives hundreds of visitors and exchange students from outside the Mainland of China. In the past 16 years, it has sent out over 700 graduates to its foreign partner universities to top-up to bachelor’s degrees or master’s degrees. In the past three years, it continually delivered two-week China Study Trip for the students of University of Wovlerhampton, UK, and has formed a very enjoyable and worthwhile programme for foreign students.

II. Programme

1. Requirements for Candidates 

At present, SZPT only receives grouped students organized by a foreign higher education institution. And the students should be present registered fulltime students in the institution.

2. Action Plan of the programme 

The activities for the programme can be divided into the following categories. Instruction: to teach basic Chinese phonetics and fundamental everyday Chinese. 8 mornings will be used for the instruction. Teaching of Chinese phonetics will be carried out in games and teaching of everyday Chinese will be implemented with participation of Chinese students. The contents of everyday Chinese are of greetings, expressions of time, date, numerals, money, and one’s own opinions.
Presentations: to provide some general information about China, Shenzhen, their history, reform, development and so on.
Sightseeing: to visit some sight- seeings is Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
Experiencing: to experience some Chinese traditions, cultures and even family life.

III. Application Process 

A higher education institution needs to sign an agreement with SZPT before the organization. Then it may promote the programme and have the application from the students. The maximum number of a group of students is not more than 20. And the minimum number is 12. SZPT will provide a free seat for one teacher to head the group.

V. Note 

The Action Plan is adjustable according to institutions that will send a group of students of more than 12. With the requirement for more cities to be visited, SZPT can also cooperate with other exemplary higher TVET institutions all over China with a new standard of charging fees.
