Welcome ceremony and information exchange symposium taking place atMeeting Room 101 of Mingde Building
Dr. Shyamal Majumdar, head of the Bonn,Germany-based UNESCO International Centre for Technical and VocationalEducation and Training (hereinafter referred to as the UNESCO-UNEVOC), paid avisit to Shenzhen Polytechnic at the invitation of the latter from February 26– 27. He met with CPC secretary Chen Qiuming and president Jia Xingdong of thePolytechnic and exchanged opinions on the Polytechnic’s development strategyand goal proposed at the Party Congress and for the 13th Five-yearPlan and the deepening of cooperation with the UNESCO-UNEVOC. They also reachedconsensus after frank and detailed discussions on the feasibility and roadmapfor implementing such cooperation.
On the morning of February 17, the Polytechnicorganized a formal welcome ceremony and information exchange symposium presidedover by vice president Li Yu, while Jia Xingdong delivered the welcome speechand Chen Qiuming presented the development status of Shenzhen and developmentgoal of the polytechnic. Majumdar made a brief introduction to the trends anddevelopments in international vocational education. As he pointed out, the UNMDGs (Millennium Development Goals) established some years ago are already overand, as they overly focused on economic development, the Goals gave rise tounbalanced development. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development establishedby the UN in 2015 has a set of 17 goals for global development, including endingpoverty, improving educational quality, green and sustainable development, andenhancing health, all of which are impossible without the development ofvocational education. Taking vocational education as one of its work prioritiesin guiding various countries in policy making, the UNESCO needs to consider notonly such factors as efficiency, validity, and attractiveness but also faireducation opportunity and inclusiveness from the perspective of equality; moreimportantly, it needs to take into account factors such as innovation,sustainability, and lifelong education. In terms of talent training anddevelopment, it needs to emphasize foundational education in science,technology, engineering, art, and mathematics and implement training anddevelopment under the framework of 21st century skills so that thosereceiving education can fully develop in a sustainable manner.
Majumdar also made a basic presentation of theUNESCO vocational education network and the vocational education virtual onlineforum developed by the UNESCO-UNEVOC for global vocational education, globalvocational education and training database, influential vocational educationcases, vocational education encyclopedia (online), and cooperative research anddevelopment, among others.
As Majumdar emphasized, traditionally, land,capital, human resources, and material resources must be available beforedevelopment is possible; in the future, however, the Internet and partners arethe key to development.

After the symposium, Majumdar took a tour ofSchool of Automotive and Transportation Engineering, School of Electronics andCommunication Engineering, and National Institute of Vocational Education Shenzhen.He highly praised the Polytechnic for its active involvement in the UNESCOvocational education network comprising more than 200 UNESCO-UNEVOC liaisoncenters in 167 countries and its achievements. He said that, as one of China’stop vocational education institution of higher learning, the Polytechnic livedup to its name, for it had a visionary and strong leadership, state-of-the-arteducational facilities, a beautiful, green campus, perfect management, and awell-defined and feasible development goal. The UNESCO-UNEVOC would, accordingto him, provide full support for the work of the UNESCO Vocational EducationLiaison Center at Shenzhen Polytechnic. Besides, he put forth a roadmap forcooperation between both sides for development from the perspective of the UNESCO-UNEVOC.He hoped that a cooperation project could be implemented in the polytechnic,have quality training projects benefiting other global liaison centers, and seta global example for education innovation and green vocational educationinstitution building.
The visit of Majumdar was a huge successthanks to full cooperation from the Polytechnic Office, Foreign AffairsSection, National Institute of Vocational Education, and relevant schools of thePolytechnic.
