The International Office & the International Education

The International Office (IO) is responsible for building and maintaining partnerships and exchange programs with overseas educational institutes. The IO also provides support and services, as necessary, to international students, to foreign staff, and to faculties seeking to develop international exchanges and cooperation.

Six full-time IO staff are committed to the promotion of external exchanges and the internationalization of Shenzhen Polytechnic. Since 1993, they have established long-term cooperative relationships, including student exchange programs, with more than 40 universities and educational organizations in Australia, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, the US and the regions of Hong Kong and Taiwan. Currently, student exchange programs are maintained with institutions in Japan, Russia, South Korea and the USA. IO staff also organize outward-bound delegations of Polytechnic personnel and receive inward-bound overseas delegations. They have received more than 30,000 visitors from universities and educational organizations at home and abroad over the past 10 years.

The IO also provides language courses at the Polytechnic, courses in Chinese and foreign languages. Chinese courses are offered to overseas language students and, since 2000, to students following our vocational courses and skills training programs. As authorized by the Guangdong Provincial Education Department, these opportunities are provided to overseas applicants 18 or older with a high school diploma and valid passport.

The Mandarin Chinese training program offers beginner, intermediate, and advanced level courses focused on providing communicative competence in Chinese. Compulsory and elective courses are given. Compulsory courses include listening, speaking, reading and writing. Elective courses include Chinese paintings, martial arts, cuisine, music, and folk dancing. Sightseeing and guided tours are also provided to interested overseas students. Generally, the Mandarin Chinese program is conducted in semesters, i.e. one semester of 15 weeks and two semesters (or one academic year) of 30 weeks.

The 7 foreign language courses currently offered on-campus are English, French, German, Korean, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. In the teaching of these, local staff are assisted by 18 foreign teachers from 11 countries.

Vocational courses, as noted in the above outline of our schools, are offered to overseas and other students in Computer Information Systems, Mechanics & Electronics, Economics & Business Management, Media & Communications, Art & Design, Applied Chemistry & Biology, Construction & Worksite Environment, Animation, Automotive & Transportation, Medical Technology & Nursing (refer to http:// www.szpt.edu.cn for more details). The programs take between 2 and 4 academic years. Upon completion of the course, a diploma is granted by Shenzhen Polytechnic under the authorization of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China.

Skills training courses, again as outlined above, are offered in Digital Moulds, Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, Printing, Biochemistry, Management, Software & Internet, Art and Design, Hospitality and Catering, and Professional Trainer Training. Upon completion, certificates are issued by Shenzhen Polytechnic under the authority of the Ministry of Labor and Personnel. Teaching is conducted in Chinese, so international students are advised to enroll in our Chinese language program while they carry out their skills training.

As China's model polytechnic, Shenzhen Polytechnic is authorized, also, to run courses overseas in Chinese culture and Chinese business. To this end, we are actively seeking partners and are open to developing curriculums and courses which meet specific local needs. Through the IO, Shenzhen Polytechnic hopes to share its successes and achievements with institutions and collaborative partners across the world.
