The School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering ( hereafter referred to as SMEE), with 2584 full-time students at present, was founded in July 2004, and so far have cultivated 4623 graduates, whose one-time employment rate stays over 95% every year.

To meet the needs of Shenzhen’s economic development and to train innovative and practical talents, SMEE has established 8 specialties, namely, Computer Aided Design & Computer Aided Manufacturing, Building Intelligence Engineering Technology, Electric Automation Technology, Computer Numerical Control Technology, HVAC Engineering Technology, Computer Control Technology, Inspection & Testing Technology, Mechotronics Technology, and Mould Designing & Manufacturing. Among them, Computer Aided Design & Computer Aided Manufacturing and Building Intelligence Engineering Technology are granted as key national model specialties for higher vocational and technical education, and Electric Automation Technology is granted as key provincial model specialty for higher vocational and technical education. SMEE has also set up automation technology research institute, engineering drawing teaching and researching office, and English teaching and researching office. There are 7 courses conferred as “National Quality Courses” and 3 as “Provincial Quality Courses”.

SMEE focus on the cultivation of innovative and practical skills for our students. Each specialty has a professional management committee, whose members are mainly the technicians from corresponding enterprises and they will assist the specialty to stipulate teaching programs and to make arrangement for students’ practice in the enterprises as well. 50% of our courses are set up for students to practice their vocational skills and most of them are choices for the cultivation of innovative skills. 95% of our graduates have acquired at least one intermediate qualification certificate for their occupations, which ensures our graduates’ employment rate over 95%. Moreover, with the acquired innovative and practical skills, quite some students won top prizes in the vocational skills competitions both at home and abroad.

SMEE works up a strong faculty of 129 full-time staff members, including 19 doctors and 70 masters, 8 professors and 59 associate professors, among whom 1 is honored as “National Teaching Master” and 3 are honored as “Gold teachers of Shenzhen Polytechnic”. 70% of our teachers are “dual-skilled”, and in addition, we’ve employed 200 part-time teachers from enterprises. With the investment of 64.4 million RMB from the Shenzhen municipal government, SMEE has built 8 on-campus practice training centers covering an total area of about 5240 m² and are proved to be fully functional with 3963 sets of facilities and dozens of software for engineering applications . Meanwhile, SMEE has also established 70 bases for off-campus internship.

SMEE pays much attention to a wide range of international exchanges and cooperation with the University of Houston in the United States, the University of Wolverhampton in United Kingdom, the University of Applied Sciences in Esslingen of Germany, the University of Applied Sciences in Nuremberg of Germany, the University of Ballarat in Australia, the Singapore Polytechnic, the Kunshan University of Technology in Taiwan, the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education and etc.. With these universities and institutes, we’ve made teacher-student exchanges and have upbuilt cooperative relations ranging from teaching programs to scientific researches. Especially, our graduates can enjoy a steady flow to the University of Wolverhampton in United Kingdom and the Ballarat University in Australia for further study through student-teacher exchange programs.

The education for all-round development has always been emphasized in SMEE. Based on our concept of self-education, self-management and self-service, we offer our students the chances to promote themselves and the stages to show themselves in the extra-curricular activities involving studying, science and technology, sports, community services, social practices and voluntary services. In SMEE, there are 16 organizations or leagues, 10 of which are aimed at the cultivation of innovative skills and abilities. As for the colorful sports and art activities, our students can always have excellent performance in basketball, soccer, volleyball, badminton, table tennis and sports meetings, as well as the competitions in singing, dancing and speech, even in various shows and parties. Especially, our students are always the backbone for our university to win the champions in provincial sports meetings.

SMEE will always keep in accordance with educational philosophy of Shenzhen Polytechnic that, in this new situation, we will continue to play the role of National Vocational Education Reform Model to promote the realization of the scientific transformation of our university, and to create a world-class vocational and technical university, and continue to blaze new trails, so as to cultivate more socially useful, practical and technical talents.
