    The School of Art & Design

    The School of Art and Design (formerly Department of Art and Design) was, in 1993, the earliest department of Shenzhen Polytechnic to be established. The school has developed ten specialties based on the educational strategy to develop specialist fields in line with Shenzhen's economic growth rate.

    These are: Environmental Art Design, Fashion Design, Advertisement Design, Industrial Design, Jewelry Design, Exhibition Design, Furniture Design, Horological Design, Image Design, Decorative Art Design, and another fifteen subject branches. They link closely to Shenzhen's cultural industry chain, and effectively serve Shenzhen's local cultural industry with professional groups. At present, the school has over 1700 students, intramural Practical Training Rooms covering 10000 , and more than 1600 items of advanced practical training equipmenttotalling valued at over 13 million RMB.

    The School of Art and Design implements the educational guidelines of combining design & production, art & technology, and industry with study and research. Practical training is at the heart of our teaching, the purpose of which is to achieve a high level of creative design ability and practical skills which are maintained throughout the whole course.

    The school has now constructed a unified and energetic faculty in accordance with the ‘Double Professional Skills' standard. The school has more than 90 teachers, 82% of which have senior or secondary professional technical qualifications and 68% have master’s or doctorate degrees. In this group, there are professors and doctors with extensive teaching experience and outstanding scientific research abilities, our engineers and technicians have extensive practical experience; there are professionals from top-level domestic universities & colleges, as well as successful graduates from universities & colleges abroad.  They are not only advanced craftsmen and designers but also scholars and artists.  Moreover, there are 45 teachers with the ‘Double Professional Skills' qualification; representing 70% of the staff.

    Besides the great achievements in the classroom, the school pays attention to teachers' continuing scientific research and professional development. In recent years, our teachers have made more than 300 scientific research achievements (including published articles, designs, paintings, monographs, inventions and patents), and they have also gained over 50 prizes in international and domestic competitions and have done more than 20 projects of vertical and horizontal directions. The school has held more than 10 important international and domestic academic activities; having great influence in the field of art and design. Significantly; five of our teachers gained prizes with their creations at the tenth National Art Exhibition. In addition, the school has undertaken many inter & intra disciplinary educational projects, and has contributed to the development of Shenzhen’s cultural industry.

    In the past twelve years, many excellent graduates from the school have been engaged in related trades. Because of their creative ideas, skills, flexibility and work ethic, they have gained recognition, which has created a virtuous circle and sustained high graduate employment rates.

    The School of Art and Design warmly welcomes all diligent students. In the context of Shenzhen's fast developing cultural industry, the school will use its advantages to strive to become a hotbed for local designers and the source of fine cultural pieces.  

     

    Training Rooms

    In line with society's development and needs, the practical training rooms in the university are instrumental in developing practical teaching; training students' applied technological and operative abilities, and emphasizing the characteristic of advanced vocational education. Over the years, the practical training rooms in The School of Art and Design have been set up to be an important base for nurturing practical design professionals.

    The Practical Training Rooms in The School of Art and Design were set up in March of 1995, consisting of twelve training rooms for Environmental Art Design, Fashion Design and tailoring, Advertising Design, Industrial Design, Jewelry Making & Accreditation, Furniture Design and Craftwork, Base of Art Design, Figure Image Design, Decorative Art Design, Exhibition Design, timepieces, Glasses and Gifts, and Sculpture Design.

    The content of the practical modules involve art design, sculpture, decorative construction, material craftwork, model design, photographic technology, digital control technology, fabric weaving, ceramic craftwork, and silk-screen printing. The whole area of the Practical Training Rooms is 10000 , with 1693 pieces of training equipment provided, and the total investment is over 1.3 billion yuan. The use of the Practical Training Rooms in the School of Art and Design integrates classroom teaching with practical production, and aims at training students' professional and applied technological abilities; emphasizes the importance of professional ability & ethics; highlights the synthesis of art, technology, design and production.

    It presents the key elements of professional post and industrial production techniques, and instills a ‘sense of place’ on the equipment, and in the environmental and workspace ambience. The purpose of this is that students can not only obtain strict and systematic professional training, but also are provided with good a work ethic and an excellent teaching environment.

     

    Clothing Design Department

    The Clothing Design Department contains two branches: clothing design and techniques, knitwear design and techniques.

    Branch of Clothing Design

    Training Objectives:

    To develop students who are sensitively aware of fashion trends, becoming highly-skilled professionals with excellent all-round qualifications in techniques of clothing design and tailoring, who will be able to cater to the needs of the fashion design industry, clothing manufacture and management in the garment industry.

    Main Courses:

    Design Performance Techniques, Clothing Design, Clothing Techniques, Fabrics, Clothing CAD, Clothing Main Modelling

    Employment Direction: Graduates will be engaged in clothing design, pattern design and production of garments or crafts. Their professional skills may also be utilized in management and marketing roles throughout fashion and its related industries.

    Branch of Knitwear Design

    training objectives:

    Develop students to be sensitively aware of fashion trends, to become high-skilled professionals with superbly comprehensive qualifications in techniques of knitwear design and production, and who will be able to cater to the needs of the knitwear industry in design, manufacture and management roles.

    Main Courses:

    Design Performance(?!?) Techniques, Clothing Design, Clothing Techniques, Fabrics, Clothing CAD and 3D modeling

    Employment Direction: Graduates will be engaged in clothing design, clothing pattern design, skilled craftwork, production management, marketing and roles requiring their professional skills in a range of related industries. 

     

    Industrial Design

    Training Objectives:

    Develop students to become professional industrial designers capable of product innovation development, product model design, structure design, transmitting (?!?) design and marketing, package design knowledge, CAD and model first board making fully utilizing modern design techniques and methods. 

    Main Courses:

    Basic Courses for Design, engineering drawing, CAID, Techniques of Effect Drawing, Human-computer Engineering Design, Design Intellect and Methods, Industrial Product Design, Product Modelling, Study of Design Management

    Employment Direction:

    Graduates will be engaged in product development, design, manufacture, business and management in high-tech companies, industrial enterprises and Specialized Design Companies.

     

    Advertising Design and Production

    Training Objectives: Develop students equipped with solid theoretical knowledge and relevant CAD/CAM skills who can enter the market as highly- competitive advertisement planners and design professionals.

    Main Courses: Basic Courses on Design, Advertising Photography, Digital Photography, Video, Character Design, Picture Design, Poster Design, Logo Design, Typesetting & Layout, POP Advertising, Book Package Design, CI Design, Animation Design and Production, CAD software applications

    Employment Direction: Graduates will work in advertising, graphic design, print design, or be engaged in planning, design or management roles in the Marketing, Sales Planning or Design Departments of large companies & SME’s. 

    Package Design Branch

    Main Courses: Foundation in Design, Advertising Photography, Typography & Layout, Picture Design, Poster Design, Package Design, Package Design Series, POP Advertising, Book Package Design, VI Design, Container Model Design, Silkscreen Printing, Paper Box Structure, carton/animation (?) Design and Production

    Employment Direction:

    Graduates will posses the design & CAD skills needed for a range of creative roles in package design, advertising, printing, PR, Retail and design departments of large, medium & small enterprises.

     

    Environmental Art Design

    Environmental Art Design offers two major branches including Interior Design and Decorative Design and Construction.

    Interior Design

    Training Objectives: Develop skilled, professional designers with knowledge of construction technology, who are highly capable at all stages of the entire interior design process from conceptualization through to realization.

    Main Courses: Basic Courses on Design, Graph-making of Construction(?), Interior Design Principles, Design Performance Technologies, Computer-aided Drawing, Hotel Design, Living-house Interior Design, Decorative Materials and Crafts, Environmental Lightning

    Employment Direction:

    Graduates will be engaged in interior design & decoration, computer-aided sketching, construction engineering and management in architecture, city planning, exhibitions, and related fields.

    Branch of Decorative Design and Construction

    Training Objectives: To provide a comprehensive foundation in construction engineering management and develop strong interior design abilities in our students producing highly professional designers and decorative construction management specialists.

    Main Courses: Foundation in Construction Design, Engineering Graph Making, Decorative Materials and Crafts/techniques(?), Computer-aided Sketching, Decorative Construction Management, Tender & contract management, Interior Design, Public Space Design

    Employment Direction: Graduates will be highly qualified for roles in construction engineering management and decorative design in enterprises engaged in architecture or decorative and landscape gardening.

    Figure Image Design

    Training Objectives: Develop students to become professional designers who will have acute fashion awareness, solid major knowledge, skills of body image design and practice, knowledge of computer software operations, appreciations on art, whole image designs including film figures’ image design, fashion figures’ image design and life figures’ image design.

    Main Courses: Foundation in Image Design, Image Chromatics, Design Performative(?) Techniques, CAD, Make-up Design, Hair-style Design, Clothing Design and Production, Creation Image Design, Commercial Image Design

    Employment Direction:

    With comprehensive skills in their major, graduates will have a range of opportunities as professional figure image designers, including film companies, TV stations, wedding photography studios, theatre & the performing arts, as consultant to fashion magazines or chromatics studios; or design or planning work in professional hair and make-up salons

    Exhibition Design

    Training Objectives: Develop students to applied professionals equipped with advanced core skills of exhibition design and manufacturing who will cater for the practical needs of exhibition industry, Meanwhile the core knowledge as the base will radiate different directions on management, strategy, business, marketing and consultancy, etc..

    Main Courses: Basic Courses on Design, General Theory of Exhibition Design, Exhibition Design Practice, Exhibition System Design, Exhibition Management and Strategy, Exhibition Design on Cultural Halls, Practice Training, etc.

    Employment Direction: Graduates will be engaged in work on design, making, management, strategy and business, etc. in exhibition design produce company, different kinds of cultural squares, large or medium sized business organizations, theme park or exhibition facility enterprises.

    Jewelry Craftwork and Appraisal

    Training Objectives: Develop students equipped with fully-comprehensive qualifications & skills in jewelry design, fine processing, jewelry appraisal and a foundation in marketing theories and practce. Students will become applied professionals to meet the needs of the jewelry design industry, production, jewelry appraisal, marketing, brand promotion and management administration. The department offers two subject branches.

     Branch of Jewelry Design

    Main Courses: Performance Skills on Jewelry Design, Jewelry Design, Jewelry Creation Design, Jewelry CAD and quick-modelling, Jewelry Design and Comprehensive Production Training, Basic Courses on Precious Stone Study, Jewelry Appraisal, Jewelry Produce Craftswork, Jewelry Inlaying Craftswork, etc.

    Employment Direction: Graduates will be engaged in jewelry design, new product development, jewelry production and management in jewelry sort enterprises.

      Branch of jewelry appraisal and trade

    Main Courses: Foundation in Precious Stones, Jewelry Appraisal and the Jewelry Trade, Management Software Applications in Marketing, Appraisal, Production, Craftwork, Inlaying, and Jewelry Design

    Employment Direction: Graduates will be sought by enterprises engaged in development and marketing strategies for jewelry brands and products as well as jewelry appraisal and testing..

     

    Decorative Art Design

    Training Objectives: Develop students to become highly sought-after professionals equipped with an appreciation of modern & traditional fine arts and the advanced capabilities in design, CAD, manufacturing art products and handicrafts, which will meet the needs of the decorative arts industry.

    Main Courses: Foundation in Design, Crafts Fine Art History, Pictures, Design Performance Techniques, Decorative Art, Basic Courses on Sculpture, Metalwork, Ceramics, Fine Fibre Art(?), Glass Art, Special Subject Handicraft Design

    Employment Direction: Graduates will be engaged in product development, design, manufacturing and management of the full scope of process in the fine art, craft and related industries.
